CV personal statement examples that actually say something

The CV personal statement is the three or four lines directly under your name, and it is the only part of your CV that every reader definitely reads. Most are wasted on phrases like hard working team player with excellent communication skills, which describes roughly everyone. The personal statement examples below show a better structure: who you are professionally, the proof, and what you want next.
The structure of a personal statement that works
Three sentences is enough. Sentence one states your job title and level of experience. Sentence two gives concrete proof: a qualification, a ticket, a sector, a scale, a result. Sentence three says what you are looking for and ties it to the advert. Keep it in the first person but drop the pronoun, which is standard on UK CVs, so write Registered nurse with six years rather than I am a registered nurse.
Two rules save most statements. First, put a number in it. Second, put the target job title in it, because both human readers and search tools look for it.
CV personal statement examples by sector
Care assistant
Care assistant with four years in residential dementia care, holding a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care and a current enhanced DBS on the update service. Experienced in personal care, medication administration under supervision, and writing daily notes that stand up to CQC inspection. Looking for a permanent day shift role in a nursing home within twenty miles of Derby.
Site carpenter
Time served site carpenter with eight years on new build housing and student accommodation, holding a blue CSCS skilled worker card, NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry and SSSTS. Comfortable with first and second fix, roof carcassing and setting out from drawings, and used to working to programme on sites of 100 plus plots. Seeking a long term contract with a main contractor in the West Midlands.
Administrator moving into HR
Office administrator with five years supporting a 60 person manufacturing business, now studying towards CIPD Level 3. Owns the starter and leaver process, runs right to work checks, and maintains absence records used for monthly reporting. Looking for an HR assistant role where the administrative side is already second nature.
Class 1 driver
Class 1 HGV driver with twelve years on tramping and multi drop, full C+E licence, Driver CPC valid to 2029 and a clean licence. Used to curtain sider, moving floor and RDC deliveries with tight booking windows, and confident with digital tacho rules and daily walkaround checks. Available for nights out, ideally on a four on four off rota.
School leaver with no experience
Recent school leaver with five GCSEs at grade 4 and above including maths and English, seeking a Level 2 business administration apprenticeship. Ran the sixth form fundraising stall for a term, handling cash and rotas for six volunteers, and completed a two week placement in a solicitors office filing and answering calls. Reliable, willing to learn and available to start immediately.
Phrases to delete today
- Hard working and reliable. Everyone claims it, nobody proves it here.
- Excellent communication skills. Show it in the writing instead.
- Think outside the box and go the extra mile. Both are noise.
- Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic company. It says nothing about the employer's vacancy.
- Passionate about delivering results. Which results, delivered how?
If deleting a phrase does not change the meaning of your statement, it was never doing any work.
Changing career, or coming back after a break
A career changer's statement has one extra job: to explain the direction of travel so the reader is not confused by the employment history below. Name the old field, name the transferable proof, and name the target role. For example: Retail store manager of nine years moving into facilities coordination, with IOSH Managing Safely and three years of responsibility for contractor access, fire checks and building maintenance across two sites.
If you have been out of work, say so in one calm clause and move on: Returning to full time work after two years of caring responsibilities, with certification refreshed in 2026. There is no need to apologise, and a straightforward line is far better than a gap the reader has to guess at. Tailor the statement, not the whole CV
You do not need a different CV for every application, but you should rewrite the statement each time. Copy the target job title from the advert, mirror one or two of its key requirements, and adjust the location or availability line. It takes five minutes and it is the highest value five minutes in the whole application.
Read it back and ask a blunt question: could this paragraph belong to anyone else applying for the same job? If yes, add the detail that only you have, whether that is a ticket, a sector, a system you run or a number you own.
